Photography guidelines for supplier profile pages

Requirements for facility photography, and recommendations to build trust with customers.

Introduction

Great photography of your facility builds trust and transparency with customers. On average, adding profile photos leads to a 10X increase in the number of inbound inquiries, and doubles the conversion rate from quote to order.

If you already have photos of your facility, use the following guidelines to pick the best images to submit for your profile page. If you are working with a photographer to take new photos or if you’re taking photos yourself, this is a great place to start.

The Lumi Pro Photography service allows you to connect with a photographer to take pictures of your facility. Examples of photos from the Pro Photography service can be found on profiles of Complete Packaging, Rusken Packaging and Decoupage+Assemblage.

Requirements

Facility photos must meet the following criteria:

  • Only use photos taken at the facility. You cannot use the same photos for multiple facilities.
  • Only show capabilities that are available at the facility. For example, if you only produce printed boxes, avoid photos of printed tape.
  • Photos are in focus and well lit, so the viewer can clearly see the subject
  • The resolution is at least 1000px on the short side at 72ppi.
  • Photos are not digitally altered with text, graphics, logos, or watermarks.

Sample photos must meet the following criteria:

  • Only product samples that were manufactured in your facilities (we do not accept work that was sub-contracted)
  • Photos are in focus and well lit, so the viewer can clearly see the subject
  • The resolution is at least 1000px on the short side at 72ppi
  • Photos are not digitally altered. Watermarks are allowed for sample photos only.
  • You have already cleared the necessary approvals to use these samples for marketing applications

Check the resolution and dimensions of a photo. If you’re using a PC, right click on the image file, choose Properties and then the Summary tab. On a Mac, right click on the image file and choose Get Info.

Taking good photos

  • Focus: Make sure everything you want to be in focus is. Use a tripod for a steady camera.
  • High resolution: Check the size and resolution of your image. For posting on Lumi, we recommend a photo that is at least 1000px on the short side at 72ppi.
  • Well lit: If your facility has natural lighting, try to take interior photos midday, when the sun is brightest. Use bounced fill flash as needed.
  • Photo composition: Try to make sure horizontal and vertical lines are straight, not distorted by a wide lens or camera angle.
  • Tidy up: Before the shoot, make sure everything you plan to shoot is cleaned up.

Recommendations

Whether you're shooting new photos or selecting from existing photos, these are some great subjects to show off what your facility is all about.

Inside your facility

  • Raw materials: A stack of corrugated board, ink being mixed, rolls of material, etc.
  • Equipment in action: Cutter, printer, converter, etc.
  • People at work: Checking TOP with a Pantone book, adjusting settings on a machine, using a loupe to check registration, etc.
  • Products that were produced in the facility: Make sure any customer logos/designs that you show have approved the use.

Outside your facility

  • Facility entrance: Give an idea of what it's like to visit!
  • Location context: Where you’re located, your surroundings, and the size of your facility.

Other great shots

  • Team photo: Show off the folks that make your facility tick.
  • Sustainability achievements: Do you reuse water for adhesives? Recycle all scrap material on site? Is your facility partially solar powered? Show off your sustainability efforts.

Tip: These images should tell the story of your facility. Imagine you’re walking a potential customer through your facility for the first time. What would you want them to see?
